Erlan Benedis-Grab. “Kazakhstan and the Limits of EAEU Integration After 2022.” A talk examining how Kazakhstan’s relationship with the Eurasian Economic Union changed after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and Kazakhstan’s strategic use of membership in the Eurasian Economic Union.
Jonathan Caldes. “Russian Loanwords in the Kazakh Language and Colonial Influence.” This paper explores the history of Russian loan words in the Kazakh language through phonology as a reflection of historical politics.
Jeannie Fagg. “Turks in Persian Classical Poetry.” A study of the meanings embedded in the poem “Turk of Shiraz” written by the famous 14th C Persian poet Hafez.
Caroline Ringquist. “From Arabic to Latin Script: Representations of Uyghur Language and Culture in Propaganda Posters in Xinjiang from 1960-1976.” This paper examines how the depiction and use of Uyghur language and culture in Chinese propaganda posters in Xinjiang changed from 1960, 1965, and 1976 and what those changes reveal about state attitudes in that critical era.
Alexander Robertson. “Nazarbayev’s Multi-Vector” Petroleum Policy.” Nursultan Nazarbayev cannily used Kazakhstan’s petroleum resources in a multi-vector approach to stabilize the economy, accumulate personal power, and fund development by balancing Russian, Chinese and Western interests to strengthen his new state’s sovereignty and regional influence.
